Is Your Steam Account Safe 89 Million Users Affected

Steam, the popular gaming platform where I purchase games, access sales, and try demos, has experienced a serious security incident. Reports indicate data from approximately 89 million Steam users has appeared on the dark web following a vendor breach.

This massive leak affects about 70% of Steam’s entire user base, making it likely many of us have had our information compromised.

The news broke when Mellow Online posted on Twitter:

“Yesterday, an alleged major Steam data breach occurred, compromising over 89 million user records. These datasets are being sold for over $5,000 on what appears to be a site similar to Mipped. Mipped and related sites form a network that SteamSentinels have repeatedly warned Steam about due to developer blackmailing, review manipulation, and other questionable activities. Unfortunately, Steam hasn’t taken action against the site.”

Protecting Your Account

This breach resulted from Steam’s failure to address known security concerns, leading to millions of user account details being sold online.

Fortunately, you can take steps to secure your account:

First, change your Steam password immediately. Make it strong and unique.

Second, enable two-factor authentication on your account for an extra layer of security.

Third, be vigilant about verification codes. Only trust codes that arrive right after you request a password reset.

Fourth, remain cautious about any emails claiming to be from Steam – they could be phishing attempts.

Steam has not yet released any official statement regarding this security breach. If you’re a Steam user, take action now to protect your gaming account and personal information.
