Multiple Nintendo Switch 2 customers are experiencing unexpected pre-order cancellations just days before the console becomes available. This situation has left many buyers frustrated and scrambling to find alternative purchasing options.
Nintendo’s latest gaming system represents the company’s first new console in more than eight years. While the Switch 2 hasn’t faced the extreme shortage issues that plagued the PlayStation 5 launch in 2020, finding units has still challenged many consumers.
Even though retailers implemented measures to prevent scalpers from buying large quantities, the hybrid console continues appearing on resale platforms like eBay at inflated prices. Some listings show prices far above the original retail cost.
Major Retailers Cancel Customer Orders
Starting June 1st, the Nintendo Switch community on Reddit began filling up with posts from disappointed customers sharing screenshots of their cancelled pre-orders. Many had secured their orders months in advance, only to receive cancellation notices at the last moment.
One customer shared their experience: “Called immediately and they said they’re cancelling a ton of orders until the July restock. Got $25 credit so at least there’s that.”
Another frustrated buyer expressed their anger: “I pre-ordered my stuff the MINUTE it became available. And my stuff is cancelled?”
The cancellations haven’t been limited to just one retailer. Both Walmart and Target customers reported receiving cancellation emails over a 10-day period, with new cases still emerging. The retailers haven’t provided detailed explanations for why these pre-orders were cancelled.
International Impact Spreads Beyond US
This problem extends beyond American borders. On May 29th, UK retailer Game published an official apology for their own wave of cancellations. The company stated they were “working hard to reinstate as many pre-orders as possible.”
The Nintendo Switch community has become more active than usual, with users either celebrating successful shipments or expressing disappointment over last-minute cancellations. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges consumers face when trying to purchase popular gaming hardware at launch.
