Recent court documents from Nintendo’s lawsuit against accessory company Genki revealed something interesting about the Nintendo Switch 2’s development timeline. Insider Gaming discovered that Nintendo began planning for their next console shortly after releasing the original Switch, with formal hardware development starting around 2019.

The court papers describe the Nintendo Switch 2 as following the same hybrid home-and-handheld model but with significant upgrades. The new console features a larger 7.9-inch LCD screen (1920×1080 with HDR10 and VRR up to 120hz), improved processing power, and enhanced Joy-Con 2 controllers with a new mouse function. It measures 4.5″H x 10.7″W x 0.55″D and weighs 0.88 lbs without Joy-Cons or 1.18 lbs with them attached.
Other specifications include 256GB onboard storage with MicroSD Express support up to 2TB, Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi 6, and Ethernet when docked. The console outputs at 4K60FPS or 1440p at 120FPS when docked. Battery life ranges from 2-6.5 hours with approximately 3 hours charging time in sleep mode.
Release Details
Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 in January 2025, followed by a full reveal in April 2025. The console launches on June 5, 2025, priced at $449.99 for the standalone console or $499.99 for a bundle including Mario Kart World.
Nintendo started working on the Switch 2 early to make sure the move from the old console to the new one would be smooth and well planned.
