Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved remarkable success by breaking multiple console launch records across different regions. The console managed to sell 1.1 million units during its debut week in the United States alone, surpassing the previous record holder, PlayStation 4.
During the launch week in America, nearly 80% of Switch 2 buyers also purchased Mario Kart World. This popular racing game was available both as a separate physical purchase and bundled with the console hardware. Circana’s sales data shows that Mario Kart World topped the physical game sales charts during the launch period, followed by Cyberpunk 2077 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
Japan Shows Strong Performance Too
The Japanese market responded equally well to Nintendo’s new console. Famitsu reported that 947,931 Switch 2 units were sold during the first four days of availability, covering the week ending June 8. These numbers likely exclude sales from Nintendo’s official My Nintendo Store, which would push the Japanese launch figures beyond the 1 million mark.
This performance makes Switch 2 the most successful console launch in Japanese gaming history. The previous record belonged to PlayStation 2, which sold just over 630,000 units during its launch period, according to Game Data Library archives.
Global Success Creates New Benchmark
Nintendo revealed that Switch 2 achieved global sales of 3.5 million units within its first four days of availability. This milestone makes it both the fastest-selling Nintendo system in company history and potentially the biggest console launch ever recorded.
To put this achievement in perspective, PlayStation 5 shipped 3.4 million units in its first four weeks and reached 4.5 million after seven weeks. However, Sony’s console faced serious supply shortages that limited its availability.
The strong opening performance positions Nintendo well to reach their goal of selling 15 million Switch 2 consoles during the first business year. Many industry analysts believe the company will exceed this target based on current sales momentum and consumer demand patterns.
