I just learned about a major update for the original Nintendo Switch that adds several useful features while also preparing for the upcoming Switch 2. This update includes shareable Virtual Game Cards and the future ability to use GameShare with certain games. Some app icons can now be customized with different colors too.
One particularly important feature hidden in the update is perfect for anyone planning to sell their original Switch before getting the Switch 2, which launches June 5.
System Transfer Made Easy

If you’re planning to buy a Switch 2, you can now upload your Switch system data to Nintendo’s servers and reset your console completely. This makes it much easier to sell or give away your current Switch while preserving all your important data.
Your uploaded data can only be downloaded to a Switch 2 using your Nintendo Account, so make sure you’ve secured a pre-order or feel confident about getting one soon. Nintendo will store your data for up to one year from upload date.
To find this option, go to System Settings, scroll to System, and select “System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2.” Then choose “I don’t have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet” and note the download deadline.
What Gets Transferred
The backup includes all your games, DLC, user profiles, save data, screenshots, videos, and system settings. However, news data, Bluetooth settings, time, language, region, and time zone settings won’t transfer, but these are fairly simple to set up again on your new console.
This update shows Nintendo is thinking ahead about making the transition between consoles smoother for loyal customers like us who plan to upgrade when the Switch 2 arrives.
